How to pick the right app
Tinder has the biggest pool in Ho Chi Minh City, Hanoi and Da Nang, mixing locals, expats and tourists. Bumble leans toward English-speaking young professionals, and women message first. Badoo is broader and cheap. For a long-term relationship, VietnamCupid is built for Vietnamese women looking for a foreign partner; it runs on Android and the web, and we found no iPhone app.
Local prices are a fraction of US ones. Tinder Plus starts at 35,000đ in the Vietnam App Store against $9.99 in the US store (25 October 2026), and you pay what your account's country charges.
English is common among younger city Vietnamese but far from universal, so keep a translation app handy. Whatever app you start on, expect to be asked for your Zalo.
Profile and first-date tips that work in Vietnam
Use clear photos of your face and a short bio: how long you're in Vietnam, what you do, what you want. A profile that reads like a two-week party trip gets fewer serious replies.
Coffee is the classic first date, and 'đi cà phê không?' (want to get coffee?) is an easy ask. Pick a busy café, book your own Grab and keep it short. Don't push for a hotel or apartment, and watch your drink: the UK government warns about drink spiking.
Pronouns matter. She'll likely call an older man anh and herself em. Xin chào (hello), cảm ơn (thank you) and hẹn gặp lại (see you again) go a long way. Public affection is more reserved than in the West, and many women take things slower than Tinder suggests.
Everyone on these apps must be 18 or older. For the law, see is it legal in Vietnam.
Vietnam dating scams: crypto, fake profiles and money requests
Romance scams in Vietnam often end in a fake investment rather than a sob story. The US Treasury's FinCEN calls it pig butchering: scammers 'fatten' a victim with a fake relationship, then steer them into crypto or forex. The FBI says crypto investment fraud cost Americans $7.2 billion in 2025, largely run by Southeast Asian crime groups who find victims through texts, social media and dating apps.
Locals get hit too. A Hanoi woman lost VND5.4 billion (about US$219,000) in five days after a Tinder match coached her into crypto: small early withdrawals worked, then the platform demanded 'taxes' and 'authentication fees' to release a fake jackpot. Vietnam's Ministry of Public Security lists romance scams that push victims into fake investment apps among its main online frauds. The person typing may not be Vietnamese at all: the UN estimates 120,000 people in Myanmar and about 100,000 in Cambodia may be held in compounds and forced to run scams.
Red flags:
- She moves you to WhatsApp or Telegram fast and keeps dodging a meetup.
- She's oddly good at trading and offers to teach you, or sends a 'platform' link.
- Early profits you can withdraw, then fees before the big payout.
- Classic money stories: an accident, a hospital bill, a ticket to visit you. The US Embassy in Hanoi says never send money to anyone you haven't met in person.
The State Department warns about internet romance scams in Vietnam. If it's happened, stop paying, keep the records, report to the local police and at home (the FBI's IC3 in the US), and ignore anyone offering to recover the money. Money sent is usually gone.
