Dating in Thailand

Checked

Dating in Thailand mostly starts on apps. Tinder is the biggest in Bangkok, Chiang Mai and Phuket, while ThaiFriendly and ThaiCupid are built for Thai singles meeting foreigners. Chats move to LINE fast. Family matters, men usually pay on early dates, and sin sod (a dowry) only comes up at marriage. The one firm rule: never send money to someone you haven't met.

Where people meet in Thailand

Apps do most of the work. In a Dataxet social-listening study of May 2024, Tinder took 77% of Thai social media mentions of dating apps, far ahead of Coffee Meets Bagel at 12%. Downloads tell a slightly different story: Omi, a swipe-and-quiz app, was the most downloaded dating app in Thailand from January to July 2024, ahead of Litmatch and Tinder.

Offline, Thais meet the way people do anywhere: through friends, work, university and the gym. Expats add language exchanges, coworking spaces and Facebook groups. Walking up to a stranger is rarer than in the West, and an introduction from a mutual friend carries real weight.

Whatever the start, the next step is LINE. Thailand has about 56 million monthly LINE users, so "add me on LINE" is the Thai version of swapping numbers. Outside Bangkok, Chiang Mai and Phuket the app pool thins out sharply, and dating gets more local and more traditional.

The dating apps that work in Thailand

Each app draws a different crowd. Tinder has the widest mix of Thais, expats and travellers in the big cities, and Tinder Plus is listed from เธฟ89 on Thailand's App Store. ThaiFriendly lets you message anyone without matching first, free at one message every 10 minutes, with Premium at เธฟ699 a month on Thailand's App Store or $19.99 in the US. ThaiCupid, part of Cupid Media and running since 2002, leans toward relationships and marriage; Gold costs เธฟ899 a month on Thailand's App Store. Bumble and Hinge suit Bangkok professionals and expats.

One way to read popularity: on 25 October 2026, Thailand's App Store showed 320,686 ratings for Tinder, 308,070 for Omi, 47,860 for ThaiFriendly and 30,196 for ThaiCupid. Ratings aren't users, but the gap is real. Every app, with prices: best dating apps in Thailand.

First dates, language and manners in Thailand

English is the first hurdle. Thailand ranks 116th in the 2025 EF English Proficiency Index, scoring 402 against a global average of 488. Expect short messages, lots of stickers and translation apps. A few words of Thai go a long way, and ThaiCupid's Platinum tier translates messages.

First dates are low-key: coffee, a mall, a street-food dinner, a movie. Men usually pay early on, though plenty of Bangkok professionals will offer to split. Public affection stays light; holding hands is about the limit in the open. Arguing loudly in public costs you both face, so if something bothers you, raise it calmly and in private.

Don't be surprised if she brings a friend to the first meeting. It's common, it's sensible, and it isn't a test you're failing.

Family, marriage and sin sod in Thailand

Family sits at the centre. Meeting her parents is a big step that tells everyone you're serious, and many Thais send part of their pay home. Bangkok's minimum wage has been 400 baht a day since July 2025, so helping family is often a practical need, not a line.

Sin sod is the money, and often gold, that the groom's side gives the bride's parents at the engagement. It is a custom, not a legal duty: a Thai law firm notes there is no statute obliging anyone to pay it, and no minimum or maximum. The same guide puts a middle-class, university-educated bride at roughly 100,000 to 300,000 baht, and says the money is frequently handed back to the couple after the ceremony. The amount is negotiated between families, usually through your partner.

If the wedding falls through for a reason on the other side, Section 1437 of the Civil and Commercial Code lets the paying side reclaim it. Since 23 January 2025 the minimum age to marry is 18, and anyone under 20 needs parental consent.

Money and romance scams in Thailand

Romance scams are big business here. Police counted 1,435 romance scam cases with losses of over 476 million baht between 17 March and 31 December 2023. Most follow the same script: a fast, intense connection, a move to LINE or WhatsApp, then an emergency.

Expats call the classic version the sick buffalo: a parent in hospital, a buffalo that died, a motorbike that needs fixing, school fees. Each request is urgent and "just this once". The bigger modern threat is the match who wants to teach you crypto or forex trading. UNODC reports industrial-scale scam centres in Cambodia, Laos, Myanmar and the Philippines, and Match Group warns of relationship-based investment scams on dating apps.

Relationships that start in a bar deserve clear eyes too. Bar staff are paid to be warm, and as one Pattaya Mail piece put it, "a drink is not a promise, a date, or a relationship". Real couples do meet that way; the test is the same as anywhere: time together away from her workplace, friends and family you actually meet, and money that doesn't keep coming up.

Two habits cover most of it. Follow the FTC's rule and never send money to someone you haven't met in person. And know that foreigners can't own land in Thailand: money you put toward a house in a Thai partner's name is, in law, a gift.

Staying safe on dates in Thailand

Meet in public for the first few dates, tell a friend where you're going, and do a video call before you travel to meet anyone. Date adults only, 18 and over. Asking for ID is normal here and nobody sensible takes offence; Thai law on minors is strict, and the detail is on our Thailand legal page.

Watch your drink. Australia's government warns that drink spiking and methanol poisoning both affect tourists in Thailand, and the UK notes spiking happens with male and female victims. Stick to branded, sealed drinks and don't leave a glass alone.

Keep private photos private: Smartraveller says Australian victims have been blackmailed after online relationships went wrong. If you need help, the Tourist Police answer on 1155, and online fraud can be reported to the AOC 1441 hotline or thaipoliceonline.go.th.

Frequently asked questions

Is it easy to find a Thai girlfriend?

Meeting people is easy; finding the right one takes the usual time. Tinder, ThaiFriendly and ThaiCupid put you in touch with Thai women within hours, especially in Bangkok, Chiang Mai and Phuket. A real relationship still means dates away from the app, meeting her friends, and a language gap: Thailand ranks 116th in the 2025 EF English Proficiency Index.

What is the best Thai dating site?

It depends on what you want. Tinder has the biggest mixed crowd in Thai cities. ThaiFriendly is best for chatting free, since you can message without matching (one message every 10 minutes). ThaiCupid suits men looking for a long-term partner, with Gold at เธฟ899 a month on Thailand's App Store. Full comparison: best dating apps in Thailand.

What is Thai sin sod?

Sin sod is a Thai dowry: money, and often gold, that the groom's side gives the bride's parents at the engagement. It is customary, not legally required, and families negotiate the amount. A Thai law firm's guide puts a middle-class, university-educated bride at roughly 100,000 to 300,000 baht, and much of it is often given back to the couple.

Who pays the dowry, husband or wife?

Traditionally the groom or his family pays sin sod to the bride's parents or guardians. Since Thailand's marriage equality amendment took effect on 23 January 2025, Section 1437 of the Civil and Commercial Code uses gender-neutral wording. If the marriage doesn't happen for an important reason on the receiving side, the payer can ask for it back.

Is $100 a lot of money in Thailand?

It's a solid amount. At about 33.7 baht to the dollar (23 October 2026), $100 is roughly 3,370 baht, more than eight days at Bangkok's 400-baht daily minimum wage. That's why small, regular money requests add up fast, and why it pays to never send money to someone you haven't met.
